Step back. Reflect. Give back.

Often times we can find ourselves defined by our goals. Did you score that new contract? When are my holidays again? How can I get a raise? We live and thrive by aiming for these targets so much so that time rolls by at an incredible speed. These little carrots are why we jumped on the hamster wheel in the first place (do hamsters eat carrots?) I know that I’m often guilty of it, and those of you who know me will agree! Sometimes we need to slow things down.

So my thoughts for this month are around taking stock and challenging your inner Zen!

Step Back – When is your quiet time? Is it when you sip your coffee while staring out the window at the big tree across the courtyard, or is it going for a quick walk through the markets at lunch, absorbing all the sounds of laughing, and smells of freshly roasted nuts intermingled with notes of fresh basil and spicy laksa? These moments let us catch our breath, helping us renew and refresh our minds. Your inbox can wait a few minutes. Go on give yourself a break, you deserve it.

Reflect – What have you accomplished this year? What lessons did you learn? What are you most proud of? You have come a long way. Write these accomplishments down where you can see them. It is so easy to get caught up checking of To Do lists. Why not write a Done and Dusted list. Much more fun and rewarding!

Give Back – What is the point of success if you can’t share it? Have you said thank you to those people who have helped you along the way? What about all those long suffering spouses, workmates and forgotten mentors? Write a quick note to say thanks, maybe include a small chocolate or something. It is always great to be appreciated. Or maybe to give back to someone who may need some sage advice, or other support. Why not support and help someone achieve their own success?

So when you are taking time to enjoy your ritual coffee or reading this article – think of what Emily Dickinson once said “Forever is composed of nows.” The present is where you are and a great place to be.

If you get, give. If you learn, teach!

At the start of my career, I learned quickly that many organisations were full of good intentions, but all too often lacking the skills and know-how to execute effectively. That’s why I founded clear decisions™ over 12 years ago. My vision was simple, I had a desire to help businesses and their people move through change projects with great success.
